TRUE. And the feature even has a name most people have never heard.

It is called Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR. It works by capturing screenshots of whatever is on your screen at regular intervals, fingerprinting those images, and matching them against a database of known content. It does not matter what you are watching or how. Live TV, Netflix, a Blu-ray, a game, content from an HDMI device the TV has no app for. If it appears on the screen the TV is identifying it.

That data gets sent back to the manufacturer and sold to advertisers. Your viewing habits, how long you watch, what you skip, what time of day you watch, all of it becomes a data product. Samsung, LG, Vizio, Roku, and Amazon Fire TVs all do this by default. Vizio was fined $2.2 million by the FTC in 2017 specifically for collecting viewing data without adequate disclosure.
